The Mehrangarh fort is one of the town’s biggest tourist attractions with its huge walls, ornate interiors and views overlooking Jodhpur’s “blue city.”

The devotees had gathered at the Chamunda Devi Temple situated on a hill top of Mehrangarh Fort when the tragedy struck at around 5.30 am after some devotees slipped on a slope causing the stampede. Officials said that the stampede occurred as the devotees along the 2-km-long route to the temple tried to rush towards its door as soon as it opened. There was a scramble on the narrow 2-km path for gaining entry to the hillock shrine in the Mehrangarh Fort run by the family of erstwhile ruler Gaj Singh. The casualties occurred in the queue meant for men while that for the women and children was unaffected, officials said.

The majority of people who died were in the age group of 18-30 years.

Rajasthan’s Principal Secretary (Home) S N Thanvi from jaipur said . “As some devotees slipped on the slope on the temple path, others gathered there started falling on each other causing the stampede. A majority of those killed died due to suffocation as a result of the stampede,”

rival kashmiri groups protest outside U.N

Posted in kashmir by Sandeep on September 27, 2008

Holding placards and banners, rival Kashmiri groups staged protests outside the United Nations on Friday afternoon during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s address to the plenary session of the UN General Assembly.

The two groups — Kashmiri American Council, a predominantly Muslim body that demands the right of Kashmiris to self-determination under the UN Security Resolutions, and the Indo American Kashmir Forum, a predominantly Hindu outfit that highlights the plight of Pandits because of ‘ethnic cleansing’ by Pakistan-aided terrorists in the state — staged the protests side by side, separated only by waist length iron barricades set up by the police.

While the KAC raised slogans against the Indian government for alleged draconian laws that imprison people who ‘resist Indian occupation,’ the IAKF blamed the Pakistani government for allegedly promoting global Islamic terrorism.

Traditionally, KAC has held protest demonstrations outside the world body every year during India’s address to the UNGA, but this was the first time IAKF held the protest as well.

“Every year, the police decline to give permission for any protests during the UNGA because there are always too many protesters during UNGA and only those who had applied early for permission to stage demonstrations, get to hold that. This year, we made it a point to prepare early to get the permission,” Lalit Kaul, president of IAKF, told rediff.com.

Both the groups handed memoranda to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, urging the world body’s intervention in solving the crisis.

KAC said that there must be an immediate and complete cessation of the “military and paramilitary action by Indian forces against the people of Jammu & Kashmir”.

The organisation demanded that all bunkers, watch towers and barricades set up by the military and paramilitary forces in towns and villages must be immediately dismantled and the right of peaceful association, assembly and demonstration should be restored to the people.

The KAC memorandum was signed by Dr. Ghulam  Nabi Fai, Shaheen Bhat, Dr Ghulam Nabi Mir, Raja Muzzaafar, Aftab Shah and Hafiz Muhammad Sabir, among others.

“The Kashmir question is one of the oldest unresolved international problems in the world. The experience of nearly six decades has shown that it will not go away and that an effort is urgently required to resolve it on a durable basis,” Fai said.

In its memorandum, the IAKF stated that even today the abuse of human rights of Kashmiri Hindus by the Islamic terrorists in the valley continues.

It urged the UN Secretary General to direct the Indian government to restore Kashmiri Hindus’ political and economic rights that would give them equal status, rather than a second class citizenship in their native land.

“We would continue our fight for our rights, whether the world body or the Indian government take any action or not. We will keep on fighting,” Kaul told rediff.com.

3O people got killed, and more than 200 peole got injured in yesterday’s blast(official figures:24 dead, 100injured).Every sane human being condemned this act of terrorism throughout the globe.Indian politicians as usual termed it as”an cowardly act”, and appealed for patience and social harmony..But what about the common innocent people who got killed in these serial blasts…..What about their family members and their near and dear ones!!! This was the fourth serial blast this year after jaipur,Bangalore and ahmedabad..Indian Mujahidin claimed resonsibility for all the four blasts..

“In the name of Allah, Indian Mujahideen strikes back once more. … Do whatever you can. Stop us if you can,” said the message. The Indian Mujahideen was unknown before May, when it claimed responsibility for a series of bombings in the western city of Jaipur that killed 61 people. The group also said it was responsible for July blasts in the western state of Gujarat that killed at least 45…

The main purpose of the blasts apart from killing innocent civilians is to install fear in the minds of common Indians and create a deep rift between the Hindus and Muslims of India………….Majority of Indians irrespective of their caste, creed, colour and religion are law abiding and peace loving people.eye for an eye will eventually make everyone blind..

The big question however remains”what is our government doing to prevent these type of incidents?”…This was not the first blast nor the last, looking at the stastistics, there will be a bomb blast again within next few months and again precious human lives lost…be prepared to listen to that standard reply from politicians,”This is a cowardly act and we condemn this act of voilence”…and life will move on as usual…for most of us…but for some who have lost their near and dear ones, life will never be same……..never….

I feel very sorry for the relatives of blast victims…I pray to god to give them enough courage,so that they may overcome this Tragedy…”May the souls of people who lost their lives in this blast rest in peace”…..
